Conductix-Wampfler installs the first E-RTG conductor bar system in South America |
The Conductix-Wampfler Latin America Port Team completed the first conductor bar system in South America designed to power Electric Rubber-Tired Gantries (E-RTGs). The system was installed at the port of Guayaquil, Ecuador, a container and multi-purpose terminal handling 65% of all the container traffic in Ecuador.

In May 2007, APG (Autoridad Portuario de Guayaquil) awarded a 20-year operating concession to Guayaquil Contecon South America - the local operating unit for ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services, Inc.). Contecon began operations in August of 2007. ICTSI is investing $170 million for facilities improvement and equipment acquisition in Guayaquil in the first years of the concession.
In 2009, Contecon attended a Conductix-Wampfler presentation on E-RTG solutions at the TOC Conference in Buenos Aires and were impressed with the concept. They were particularly interested in the fuel savings provided by the electric RTG. Making the idea even more appealing was the fact that the port will likely lose government fuel subsidies at some point in the near future.
Our Latin America Team and the E-RTG team from Conductix-Wampfler AG worked with Contecon to develop the ideal system for their application and needs. Initially, there are two E-RTGs installed and eventually there will be eight in total. The chosen system is Conductix-Wampfler’s 1000 amp, 4-conductor, 813 Series conductor bar system, with two “plug-in” style trolleys. The steel support structure will accommodate Conductix-Wampfler’s “drive in” trolley system for the next phase of the electrification project.
