A "level wind" by definition is a reel designed to wrap the cable onto a cylindrical cable drum, either one wrap deep or in multiple wrap layers. The reel is equipped with a special cable guide that moves parallel with the spool to assure that the cable wraps onto the drum correctly. The drive system can be Magnetic Coupler drive, direct-drive, or chain-drive, depending on the application.

Level wind reels are commonly used for bulk material handling equipment, mining equipment, and for some types of container cranes. This style of reel works exceptionally well for long lengths of large-diameter cable
