Bumpers, High-Speed Cellular

High-Speed Cellular
High-Speed cellular bumpers have a strong absorption capacity with long compression length. As a result they produce low limit forces and favorable deceleration values. The material of this cellular bumper is the only polyurethane elastomer with a uniform cell structure. These cellular bumpers are especially suited for dynamic load and have excellent volume compressibility.

Some properties of this polyurethane-elastomer are:

  • High Tensile stress values
  • High breaking elongation values
  • Very strong impact resistance
  • Very good abrasion resistance
  • Volume compressible
  • Good impact elasticity and reset force
  • Temperature range form -200C possible
  • Short temperature peaks of 1000C possible (2120F)
Damping

Damping depends on many factors, such as density, temperature, deformation rate and other influences and is therefore not a constant value. However it can be stated that damping decreases with increasing temperature and density. At -200C the buffer reaches its maximum damping which is only about 40%. At still lower temperatures the material will harden, however without crystallizing or becoming brittle.

Dynamic loads

With dynamic load the peak-to-peak voltage should not exceed 4 N/mm2. The spring deflection on static load, the frequency and the amplitude of the dynamic laod have a strong influence on the fatigue resistance. Due to the cell structure of the material and the enclosed gas volume the spring characteristics will be changed when the impact speed is increased.

Thrust

Cellular bumpers are designed for compressive stress. In case of thrust the lateral displacement must not exceed 50% of the bumper height. Thrust alters the energy absorption capacity of the bumper and affects the compression length and consequently the limit force and deceleration.

Volume compressibility and transverse elongation

Cellular bumpers may be compressed up to 80% of their nominal height. This produces a transverse elongation (depending on the bulk density) of up to max. 45% of its nominal diameter.

Chemical properties

The bumpers are resistant against aliphatic hydrocarbons such as oil and grease as well as ozone and aging. You can expect a general resistance in technical application. These bumpers are however only limited resistant against hydraulic oil and certain Molykote types and moreover not resistant to strong acids and leaches. Longer exposure to hot water and water vapor will result in decomposition of the bumpers in spite of the hydrolysis preservative contained in the recipe.

Range of application

These cellular bumpers will be used on high-speed heavy duty cable trolleys. They replace the rubber bumpers on Series 365 and 370 I-Beam Festoon Trolleys.  This modification will produce better results, since the cellular bumper has a longer compression length than the rubber bumper.
