Slip Rings / Rotary Joints

Our Slip Rings range is designed to fully meet the requirements!

Slip Rings are electromechanical devices for transmitting electrical power, control signals, and/or data from a stationary to a rotating structure (or vice versa). We offer a complete range of slip rings for transmitting voltage from mV to 36 kV and currents from mA to 3600 A. All the series are suitable to be mixed with signals and data. Customized solutions can go further reaching up to 13000 A and 43.2 kV. We always apply the best technology to meet your needs: double or multiple brushes, gold wires or bundle wire contacts. We can provide composition from a few poles to several hundreds, based on the requirements of your application. Slip Ring Assemblies can be supplied either as open, “non-enclosed” types for special customer adaptations, or totally enclosed with high impact plastic or metal housing, suitable even for hazardous locations. Additional rotating couplings are available for fluids or gases and fiber optic swivels can be integrated.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is a Slip Ring?

A slip ring is an electro-mechanical device that transmits power, signals and data from a stationary side to a rotating part of a machine.

How does a Slip Ring work?

Slip rings are based on sliding contacts that guarantee the transfer of power, signals, data while the unit is rotating. These are generally based on rings on one side and contacts like brushes, gold wires, bundle wires, etc. on the other side. The two parts have a relative movement, the side in rotation is defined as rotor, the stationary side is called stator.

Which applications / machines need Slip Rings?

Slip rings are used in any system that requires rotation while transmitting power, signals or data. They can be necessary due to the specific function of the machine or they can be an option to improve the performance of the system, increasing productivity. Slip Rings are also used in systems that don't require an endless rotation, in order to avoid frequent damages on moving cables.

What can be transferred using a Slip Ring?

With a proper design, every kind of power, signals and data can be transferred using slip rings. It is of course fundamental to choose the right type of technology and properly dimension the product to make it suitable for the desired level of voltage, ampacity and data rate.

What is the typical lifespan of a Slip Ring?

A slip rings' lifespan depends on the use in the machine. Of course high speeds and high numbers of revolutions per day are impacting the duration of the sliding contacts. For these reasons it is important to know the application and to select the right type of sliding contact among the many available at Conductix-Wampfler.
